SMCC Women's Volleyball Takes Set at No. 18 Glendale CC, Falls to Scottsdale CC

The South Mountain Community College women's volleyball team (0-5, 0-3 ACCAC) lost 3-1 to No. 18 Glendale CC on Sept. 10 and 3-0 to Scottsdale CC on Sept. 12 in a pair of ACCAC Division II road matches last week. Sophomore Alyssa Szymanski had a season-high 11 kills, and freshman Talullah Johnson set a season best with nine as the Cougars won set three against the nationally ranked Gauchos on their home floor. Against the Fighting Artichokes, Szymanski and Johnson led SMCC with five kills apiece while sophomore Amanda Mitan and freshman Morgan Moraga each had three. 

Glendale CC Recap

The Cougars captured their first set of the season, but ultimately fell 25-17, 25-9, 21-25, and 25-16. SMCC posted nine kills on 29 swings to hit .172 in the third set and finished the match with 29 kills, 28 assists, three service aces, 51 digs, and four block assists. 

Szymanski hit .156 on 32 swings and added five digs, a service ace, and a block assist over the four sets. Johnson totaled the nine kills on 43 swings to finish with a .140 hitting percentage, adding three digs, a service ace, and a block assist. 

Freshman Isley Seabrooke was third on the team with four kills and added a service, while Moraga recorded a pair of kills. Freshman Ava Moreno led SMCC with 15 digs, and freshman Keira Allen added 10. 

Sophomore Ailynn Solis led the Cougars with 21 assists and narrowly missed a double-double with nine digs. 

Scottsdale CC Recap

The Cougars fell 25-21, 25-11, and 25-14 to the Fighting Artichokes. SMCC finished with 17 kills, 17 assists, three service aces, 54 digs, one solo block, and six block assists. 

Johnson hit .125 on 32 swings to tie with Szymanski for the team lead with five kills. She added a season-high 10 digs and a block assist over the three sets. Szymanski had five kills on 22 swings and added five digs and a block assist. 

Mitan hit .133 on 15 swings to finish with three kills, two block assists, and one dig, while Moraga also hit .133 on 15 swings to finish with three kills, five digs, one solo block, one service ace, and one block assist. 

Solis led SMCC with eight assists and added six digs, while freshman Allie Encinas had seven digs, five assists, and a service ace. Moreno posted nine digs and two assists.
