SMCC Women's Volleyball Falls to Chandler-Gilbert CC, No. 10 Mesa CC

The South Mountain Community College women's volleyball team (1-7, 0-5 ACCAC) fell 3-0 in a road match at Chandler-Gilbert CC on Sept. 24 and 3-1 in a home match against No. 10 Mesa CC on Sept. 26. Sophomore Alyssa Szymanski led the Cougars with seven kills and freshman Morgan Moraga added five kills in the match with the Coyotes. Two days later, freshman Talullah Johnson posted a team-high 12 kills and fellow freshman Esra Bryant had a season-high six kills as the Cougars took a set against the nationally ranked Thunderbirds.

The Coyotes won in three sets over the Cougars in an ACCAC road match: 25-13, 25-19, 25-18. SMCC finished with 23 kills, 22 assists, four service aces, 42 digs, one solo block, and two block assists. 

Szymanski hit .136 on 22 swings to lead the Cougars on offense. She added three digs over the three sets. Moraga had five kills in 14 attacks to post a .214 hitting percentage, and added a dig and a block assist. 

Freshman Ava Moreno led SMCC with 12 digs and added two assists, while sophomore Ailynn Solis had a team-high 10 assists to go with four digs. Amanda MitanAbby KilpatrickIsley Seabrooke, and Johnson each had two kills. 

Mesa CC Recap

The Cougars won the third set in their second meeting with the Thunderbirds before falling in four frames: 25-12, 25-16, 24-26, 25-11. SMCC totaled 30 kills, 38 assists, two service aces, and 70 digs over the four sets. 

Johnson hit .235 on 34 swings to set a new season best with 12 kills. She added six digs and an assist. Bryant hit .312 on 16 attacks and added two digs and a service ace. 

Szymanski also posted six kills and led SMCC with a career-high 21 digs, while freshman Isley Seabrooke had a season-high five kills to go with two digs. Kilpatrick and Mitan also had five kills apiece, with both recording two digs. 

Moreno recorded 13 digs to reach double-digit digs for the third-straight match and added three assists. Solis recorded 19 assists and five digs, and freshman Allie Encinas had 13 assists and 10 digs to produce her first double-double of the season.
