Cougar Women's Volleyball Battles with No. 25 Scottsdale CC, Pima CC

The South Mountain Community College women's volleyball team (0-3, 0-1 ACCAC) lost 3-0 at No. 25 Scottsdale CC on Sept. 3 and 3-0 to Pima CC in an ACCAC home match on Sept. 5 in a pair of contests last week. Freshman Morgan Moraga led the Cougars with six kills while hitting .385, and freshmen Esra Bryant and Julia Abdelsalam and sophomores Abby Kilpatrick and Alyssa Szymanski added four kills apiece against the Fighting Artichokes. Two days later, Szymanski led SMCC with five kills, and Moraga added four against the Aztecs.

The Cougars fell 25-11, 25-14, and 25-15 to Fighting Artichokes in a non-conference road match on Sept. 3.  SMCC finished with 24 kills, 24 assists, 49 digs, four block assists, and one service ace over the three sets. 

Moraga posted six kills on 13 swings and added two service aces, a dig, and a block assist, while Bryant had four kills on 11 swings (.273) and added a block assist. 

Abdelsalam led SMCC with 13 digs and added a block assist to go with her four kills. Szymanski recorded five digs and a service ace to go with her four kills, and Kilpatrick produced a pair of digs. 

Sophomore Ailynn Solis and freshman Allie Encinas led SMCC with 11 assists, with Solis recording seven digs and Encinas adding three. Freshmen Ava Moreno and Keira Allen had seven digs, and freshman Talullah Johnson had two kills and two digs. 

Pima CC Recap 

The Cougars fell 25-16, 25-18, and 25-22 in three sets to the Aztecs in both teams' 2025 ACCAC Division II opener. SMCC totaled 17 kills, 17 assists, 38 digs, one service ace, two solo blocks, and six block assists in the defeat. 

Szymanski had a team-high five kills in 25 swings and added a pair of digs, while Moraga finished with four kills on 13 swings (.154) and added a block assist. 

Kilpatrick and Abdelsalam had three kills apiece, with Kilpatrick posting a solo block and Abdelsalam recording a team-high 13 digs and a solo block. Freshman Isley Seabrooke had two kills and two block assists, and Bryant also had two block assists. 

Encinas led SMCC with 10 assists and nearly posted a double-double with nine digs. Solis had six assists, a service ace, and a dig, and Moreno recorded eight digs and a service ace.
