Lexi Tuinstra Wins Chandler-Gilbert Invite, No. 12 SMCC Women's Golf Named ACCAC Co-Champions

Freshman Lexi Tuinstra claimed individual medalist honors with a final score of +9 (153) at the Chandler-Gilbert Invite on Mar. 31 and Apr. 1 at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz. Freshman Madilyn Hongell-Jimenez placed fifth at +20 (164) and freshman Elaina Hales placed seventh at +29 (173) to lead the Cougars, who finished second as a team at +90 (666). SMCC was named ACCAC Division II Co-Champions with Mesa CC by winning three of the six spring tournaments. 

Tuinstra opened with a two-over 74 in which she posted a one-under 35 on the back nine. She birdied the par-four No. 11, the par-five No. 12, and the par-four No. 14 and added four pars over the final nine holes. On the second day, she had three more birdies on the back nine (No. 10, No. 14, and No. 15), and added six pars to post a seven-over 79 to claim individual medalist honors by five strokes. She also won the Lady Thunderbird Invitational and the PVCC Spring Invitational this spring. 

Hongell-Jimenez was fifth with scores of 11-over 83 and nine-over 81. She carded a birdie on the par-three No. 8 and added seven pars in her first round, and added 12 pars in her second round. 

Hales posted scores of 14-over 86 and 15-over 87. She had seven pars in her first round, and added four pars and a birdie on the par-four No. 6 in her second round. 

Freshman Jaycee Garcia tied for eighth at +32 (176) with scores of 14-over 86 and 18-over 90. She had seven pars and a birdie on the par-five No. 17 in her first round, and four pars in her second round. 

Freshman Molly McDonald was 10th at +33 (177) with scores of 15-over 87 and 18-over 90. She had six pars on her first day and carded six more in the second round. 

Freshman Mya Foord was 11th at +38 (182) with rounds of 17-over 89 and 21-over 93. She had three pars and a birdie on the par-three No. 15 in her first round, and three pars in her second. 

The Cougars opened with a 41-over 329 to trail Mesa CC by 10 strokes after the first day. They then posted a 49-over 337 in her second round to finish 19 strokes behind the Thunderbirds. 

SMCC next plays in the NJCAA Region I Division II Championships at Ocotillo Golf Course in Chandler, Ariz., from Apr. 20-23.
