SMCC Women's Golf Places Second at South Mountain Invitational

The South Mountain Community College women's golf team finished second at +108 (684) at the South Mountain Invitational Feb. 11-12 at Sun City Country Club in Sun City, Ariz. Freshman Madilyn Hongell-Jimenez paced the Cougars with a third-place finish at +21 (165), while freshmen Jaycee Garcia, Lexi Tuinstra, Mya Foord, and Elaina Hales finished sixth through ninth, respectively.
 
Hongell-Jimenez had a stellar front nine in her opening round, carding three birdies over the first four holes. She finished at seven-over 79 for the round, adding 10 pars during the day. She posted a 14-over 86 with another 10 pars in her second round to finish at +21 (165).
 
Garcia recorded two birdies, on the par-four No. 9 and on the par-five No. 15, in her opening round en route to a nine-over 81. She added one birdie and four pars in her second round to post a 19-over 91 to finish sixth at +28 (172).
 
Tuinstra was seventh at +29 (173) with scores of 14-over 86 and 15-over 87. She carded five pars in her first round and six more over the final 18.
 
Foord was eighth at +31 (175) with rounds of 18-over 90 and 13-over 85. She recorded a birdie on the par-five No. 10 to go with three pars over the first 18 holes, and added seven pars and a birdie on the par-four No. 2 in her second round.
 
Hales placed ninth at +33 (177) with scores of 19-over 91 and 14-over 86. She registered a birdie on the par-four No. 14, plus four pars in her first round. In her second round, she recorded birdies on the par-five No. 6 and the par-four No. 9, plus eight more pars.
 
Freshman Molly McDonald was 11th at +36 (180) with scores of 20-over 92 and 16-over 88. She had three pars in her first round and carded another six more in her second.
 
SMCC sat seven strokes behind Mesa CC after one day of action, but dropped 21 strokes on the second day to finish second to the Thunderbirds.
