Bio
Kris Maglunog joined the South Mountain CC women's volleyball staff as an assistant coach in August 2025. A veteran coach with experience at the intercollegiate, high school, and club levels, Maglunog will assist with the development of the Cougars' offensive system and handle other administrative duties.
Maglunog currently serves as the Varsity Boys Head Coach at Horizon Honors High School in Phoenix, where he led the Eagles to their first playoff run in two seasons. Maglunog started his head coaching journey as the Horizon Honors Girls Varsity Volleyball Program in 2015, leading the Eagles to region championships in 2015 and 2016. Coach Maglunog also led the Eagles to win the 2A State Championship in 2016, the first in school history, and was voted Region Coach of the Year in 2015, 2016, and 2018, and the 2A Conference Coach of the Year in 2016. Maglunog also established the Horizon Honors Girls Beach Program in 2017. Most recently, Coach Maglunog was inducted into the first class of the Horizon Honors Athletics Hall of Fame as a Coach and for the 2016 Girls Volleyball Team.
Maglunog had a stint as the Assistant Athletic Director and was the Head Varsity Girls and Boys Volleyball at Benjamin Franklin High School in Queen Creek, Ariz., for two seasons. He led the Chargers Volleyball Program to its first playoff wins in school history (girls 2023, boys 2024) and led the boys program to back-to-back Region Championships and was voted the 2023 Region Coach of the Year.
At the club level, Maglunog currently is the Head Coach for Aspire 14 Groot (Boys 14-1’s) where he led them to two Arizona Region Championships in 2021 and 2022, and two Arizona Region Third-Place Finishes in 2023 and 2024. He also led the boys to a 5th Place finish in the 2023 AAU Open Division, and a USAV 14s Club National Championship in 2022. On the girl’s side, Coach Maglunog was also the head coach for the 17 Premier and 18 Premier teams in 2023 and 2024, earning a bid to the USAV GJNC. Coach Maglunog was also a head coach at Club One Girls Volleyball for eight seasons.
Maglunog played high school volleyball as a setter at Skyline High School in Phoenix, earning Second Team All Region Honors in 2006. He also has played Adult Club Volleyball for the AZ Region, has competed in various adult indoor and beach tournaments throughout the country, and even had a small stint on Phoenix Ascension, which competes in the VLA.
