SMCC Women's Volleyball Knocks off Ottawa University (AZ)

The South Mountain Community College women's volleyball team defeated Ottawa University (JV) 3-1 in a non-conference match on Oct. 15 at the SMCC Gym. Sophomore Alyssa Szymanski led the Cougars with 12 kills, freshman Talullah Johnson added 10 kills, and freshman Keira Allen posted a season-high 23 digs as the Cougars knocked off the Spirit. Two days later, SMCC fell 3-0 to Scottsdale CC in an ACCAC Division II match in which Szymanski and sophomore Abby Kilpatrick led the Cougars with six kills apiece. 

Ottawa University (JV) Recap 

The Cougars won in four sets over the Spirit to record their first home victory of the season: 25-8, 25-22, 22-25, 25-21. SMCC totaled 38 kills, 37 assists, 11 service aces, 69 digs, four solo blocks, and 10 block assists. The Cougars had 10 kills and hit .296 in the first set and added 12 kills in the second frame. 

Szymanski hit .333 with 12 kills and four errors in 24 attacks. She added seven digs, four block assists, and a solo stuff to finish with a team-high 15 points. Johnson had 10 kills and three errors in 34 swings, and produced four service aces and two digs. 

Freshman Julia Abdelsalam and sophomore Esra Bryant each had four kills. Abdelsalam added 10 digs and has now reached double-figures in the category in five of the Cougars' last six matches. Bryant posted three solo blocks, four block assists, two digs, and a service ace. 

Allen set a new career best with 23 digs and added a season-high 10 assists to record her first career double-double. Freshman Allie Encinas also posted a double-double, her second of the year, with 15 assists and 12 digs. She added three service aces as well. 

Sophomore Ailynn Solis posted 11 assists, six digs, and three service aces, and sophomore Amanda Mitan finished with three kills, three digs, a block assist, and an assist. 

Scottsdale CC Recap

The Cougars fell in straight sets to the Fighting Artichokes: 25-18, 25-21, and 25-22. SMCC totaled 22 kills, 21 assists, five service aces, 66 digs, and 16 block assists in the conference match. 

Kilpatrick hit .250 with six kills and two errors in 16 swings, adding two digs and two block assists. Szymanski added three digs and three block assists to her six kills. 

Mitan posted four kills and hit .375 with four block assists and a dig, while freshmen Isley Seabrooke and Abdelsalam had two kills apiece. Abdelsalam added 12 dis, two block assists, and an assist. 

Allen led SMCC with 14 digs while Solis had 10 digs and nine assists. Encinas recorded her second double-double of the week with 11 digs and 10 assists.
