Cougar Baseball's Season Comes to a Close with 5-2 Loss to Southeastern CC

PHOENIX ---

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (47-19) lost 5-2 to Southeastern CC (IA) in an elimination game Monday afternoon at the 2025 NJCAA Division II World Series at David Allen Memorial Ballpark in Enid, Okla. Freshman Bryan Lorenz had two RBIs, and freshman Bobby Pierce Jr. and sophomore Joe Terranova scored runs, but the Blackhawks hit a two-out, three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie. SMCC would bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but SECC got the final three outs to eliminate the Cougars.

Scoreless through three, Terranova led off the fourth with a single and moved to second on a groundout. Lorenz then ripped a double down the left-field line to break the deadlock and give SMCC a 1-0 advantage.

SECC responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. However, the Cougars answered right back in the top of the sixth.

Pierce Jr. and Terranova walked to start the inning and moved into scoring position on a groundout. Lorenz then plated Pierce Jr. with a sac fly to tie the game at 2-2.

SMCC got a leadoff double from sophomore Marcus Romero in the seventh, but he was stranded at third to end the inning. In the ninth, sophomore Luke Jones and Romero walked to start the frame, but the next three batters went down in order to end the game.

Lorenz was 1 for 3 with the double and two RBIs, and Terranova also went 1 for 3 with a run scored. Pierce Jr. walked twice and scored once, and Jones had the team's fourth hit.

Freshman Grant Young (6-2) took the loss with 1.2 innings of relief work with two hits, three earned runs, and a walk. Freshman Lukas Geisler started the game for SMCC and went five innings with five hits, two earned runs, one walk, and five strikeouts. Sophomore Matt Elliot tossed the final 1.1 innings for SMCC, not allowing a baserunner.

SMCC finished the year 47-19 overall and won the ACCAC Division II regular season, the Region I Division II Tournament, and the Division II West District Championships.
