Trip Diary by SID Geoff Herberg
Tuesday, May 20
The Cougars left South Mountain CC bright and early at 8:30 a.m. and made their way to Albuquerque for the first leg of the trip. After a brief stop in Holbrook for lunch, the Cougars practiced at Rio Rancho High School. The home of the Rams offered SMCC the chance to practice on a turf field. The Cougars would like to thank Rio Rancho baseball head coach David Gomez and assistant coach Matt Garley for letting them use the facilities. Dinner came from a preeminent chicken restaurant, and the Cougars settled in for the night.
Wednesday, May 21
The Cougars departed Albuquerque early and stopped at Amarillo High School in Amarillo, Texas. The home of the Sandies provided a nearly identical field layout to the one SMCC will see in Enid with a turf infield and a grass outfield. SMCC would like to thank Amarillo High School baseball head coach Randon Johnson for using their facilities. SMCC then got back on the bus and made a stop at the legendary Buc-ees, stocking up on supplies and its famous brisket.
The 8-and-under Force Baseball Team and their families greeted the Cougars upon their arrival at the hotel in Enid and hosted a pizza party. The players for both teams mingled, and the Cougars signed autographs for their newest fans.
Thursday, May 22
The Cougars made their way to David Allen Memorial Ballpark for the first time on the trip, lifting weights and doing other conditioning exercises under the guise of assistant coach Justin Quinn. \
After practice, the team had some downtime at the hotel for lunch and rest. The Cougars practiced in the late afternoon at Northern Oklahoma College-Enid, another field with a turf infield and grass outfield like David Allen Memorial Ballpark. Afterward, the Cougars prepared for the night's highlight: the Force 8u baseball game.
With the Cougars lining the stands, the Force 8u put on quite a show with its offense and defense. The Force 8u hit several loud line drives and made multiple defensive highlights against a talented Expos squad. Afterward, SMCC student-athletes Thomas Peck, Santiago DiBene, and Bobby Pierce Jr. took to the hill to pitch to the Force 8u. The younger squad continued to swing a hot bat, and the line-up produced some memorable plays, with the Force 8u outrunning several Cougars sprinting in to try and make the tag. The teams received love, appreciation, and lots of goodies from the crowd for their work.

The Cougars had a light morning, but things ramped up quickly. The team took its official World Series picture and got to practice on the official field at David Allen Memorial Ballpark. Afterward, the team enjoyed some Oklahoma BBQ and relaxed in the stands as other teams praticed.
After a quick jaunt to the hotel, the team returned to David Allen Memorial Ballpark for the World Series' Opening Ceremonies. Veterans from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War received loud rounds of applause as they moved the flame of freedom around the diamond to signify the opening of the World Series. SMCC head coach Todd Eastin later received his NJCAA West District Coach of the Year award.
Saturday, May 24
The Cougars got an early start to the day, but it was a memorable one. SMCC and Pearl River CC (MS) attended an Enid Miracle League Game and helped the participants enjoy a few innings on the diamond. Each Cougar was paired up with a member of one of the teams, and they helped them bat and run the bases. One player hit two home runs and everyone celebrated a wonderful morning with some big time baseball talent.
The Cougars headed to David Allen Memorial Ballpark next, catching the end of the Kellogg CC (MI)-Southeastern CC (IA) which resulted in an 8-1 KCC victory. Some of the hitters took bating practice and SMCC stayed for an inning or two of the East Central CC (MS)-Catawaba Valley CC (NC) contest. The ECCC Warriors won the game 6-5, holding on after CVCC scored twice in the top of the ninth, and will face the Cougars tomorrow.
SMCC reunted with Force 8u for a BBQ dinner at their baseball field. The Cougars tossed some batting practice and allowed the Force 8u to get some cuts off some World Series student-athletes.
