Pat comes to SMCC directly from Phoenix College, where he had served for 10 years as Head Volleyball Coach, Academic Advisor, and Adjunct Faculty in Health Enhancement. He taught Volleyball Strength and Conditioning Class, Volleyball Activity Class, and Healthful Living.
In his short tenure at SMCC, he has taken the team to the playoffs (2007) for the first time in 10 years, has led 4 all region & 3 all conference players, and helped the team win 2 consecutive NJCAA Academic Team of the Year awards, which goes to the team with the highest grade point average in the country. That makes 6 of the last 8 years that his teams have been crowned the Academic National Champions!
Every year from 2000 to 2004 his teams were named NJCAA Academic Team of the Year. In 2004 Coach Mooney was name ACCAC Coach of the Year. In 2003, he was named Coach of the Year by the Phoenix Women’s Sports Association. In 1999, Pat was named NJCAA District E Coach of the Year, as well as Phoenix College Coach of the Year. His team was Phoenix College Team of the Year for 2000-2001. Also, in 1999, the team placed fourth at the National Tournament.
For 15 years, Pat has also worked with 2 junior volleyball clubs with his latest tenure at Spiral, as both Head and Assistant Volleyball Coach. In 2009 Pat’s Spiral 18’s team finished in 5th (out of 48) place at the National Championship Tournament.
In 2005, he served as assistant coach with USA Volleyball Arizona High Performance, helping the team to place 11th at the 24-team National High Performance Tournament. Most recently, Pat was the assistant for the 2008 & 2009 teams, with the 2008 team winning the championship that was the first ever for an Arizona team!
In addition, Coach Mooney was Assistant Coach at Scottsdale Community College in 1995. From 1991 to 1996, he was a Physical Education teacher in the Kyrene School District as well as Boys’ and Girls’ Head and Assistant Volleyball Coach at Corona del Sol High School. Both schools are in Tempe, AZ. At Corona, he led both of the programs to the state semi-finals from 1994 to 1996, and was AIA Central Region Coach of the Year in 1995.
In 2004, Coach Mooney graduated summa cum laude from Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, with a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership. In 1990, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education degree, with an emphasis on Physical Education, from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. He is married to Jama Nacke, a middle school principal in the Kyrene school district and has 2 college-aged stepchildren, Carter & Carly.
