SMCC Softball played great ball in March…

 Women Softball

Cougar softball went 17-6 in the month of March.  Throughout the season thus far, they have won more than 30 games with a big run in the month of March.  With 23 games in 31 days, the Cougars had their plates full.  They had key wins against Western Nebraska, Mott College along with going 6-4 in conference play.  The Cougars also had 2 players of the week during this month, Brittany Johnson and Felicia Wilson.

Coach Graham cannot be happier with the team then where they are now.  “I’ve told my girls since day one that we should be playing our best softball middle of April, beginning of May, which is fast approaching and we are right there”, Coach Graham states.  "I believe that with this momentum that we have, moving into the month of April, we should come up on top and make our way into Playoffs."

“I’m very proud of each of the girls this year, every girl has accepted their roles, and we are starting to play as a team.”   The Cougars have 14 games in the month of April and if all goes as planned they should finish the month of April above .500, heading into playoffs.

ACCAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

Felicia Wilson is ACCAC Division II Batter of the Week. She was 9/17 (.530) with 5 homeruns, 9 runs batted in (RBI's) and scored 4 runs for the Cougars.  She had a great week for the Cougars.  This is their 3rd player of the week.

2010-2011- New Signees

South Mountain CC softball team would like to announce their 2010-2011 signees.  Coach Graham is setting a new foundation and with 17 current freshmen they do not need to add many new faces next year.  Coach Graham believes that each of the individuals will bring something special to this program.  The softball program is not done recruiting, but signed their top recruits this past month.  Coach Graham is extremely excited on where this program is going, and with these four athletes, we will become even better next year.

SMCC Softball Update

By Jim Richards

March 3, 2007 - First-year SMCC softball coach Kristina Schmallen wants everyone to know that nobody should give up on her softball club.

A 3-9 league mark doesn’t look like much, but the SMCC softball team is right in the thick of the playoff race for the ACCAC Division II playoffs.

“The playoffs are so far away,” said Schmallen of the NJCAA Region I Div.II Tournament that runs May 1 and 2. “There’s plenty of time to make the playoffs. We’re getting better and better every day.”

The Division II Cougars have evenly split six ACCAC games with DII opponents and entered the week only two games out of the fourth-and-final playoff spot. More Moore

Schmallen Era Set To Begin

By Jim Richards

April 25, 2008 - Kristina Schmallen knows what it’s like to be a part of a champion ACCAC softball team and she’s of the opinion that she can guide a club to the top.

“If you look at the last six to 10 years of National Champions, at Division I or DII, a junior college softball team has won from the state of Arizona,” said Schmallen, who will replace the retiring Tony Maya as SMCC’s new softball coach at the end of the current season “The kids are here. We just have to get them.”

Schmallen was a member of the 2004 Pima Community College NJCAA Division I championship team and is currently an assistant softball coach at Kansas’ Fort Hays State University. She played softball at Tolleson Westview High School before moving on to Pima and then the University of New Mexico. More Moore
