Women's Basketball

The youthful SMCC basketball team gave every impression that it could be a force in the 2007-08 ACCAC DII race after posting two wins and one loss in last weekend’s 2007 ACCAC Jamboree at Mesa Community College.

The Cougars return only two players off last season’s squad, but defeated Glendale and host Mesa –the defending ACCAC DII regular-season champion—during the jamboree.

First-year coach Lori Demski applauded the play of sophomore center Ashley Sparks and freshman swingman Kristy Krause during the tournament.

“They were just outstanding the whole time,” Demski said. “Ashley tore it up inside. We didn’t keep stats, but I can tell she had a lot of rebounds. Krause was probably the only one who was consistent in all three games. We had a little slip-up against Pima (a loss), but she was consistent throughout that game, too.”

Like many coaches with squads loaded with freshmen, Demski doesn’t expect to her Cougars to take the conference by storm when conference play begins in late November.

“Once we get the youngness out of them and it’s going to take a while, I think we’re going to be just fine,” Demski said. “We have a very young team, but they have a lot of basketball savvy.”

Sparks and forward Autumn Kelczewski are the only returning players off last year’s team that went 11-11 in conference play.

Point guard Tara Vandermate has returned after a few seasons off and could contend for a starting spot in the backcourt. Demski recently announced the addition of 2-guard Kendra Poole.

Freshmen Chelsea Brown (power forward) Danielle Esquivel (center-forward), Candace Davis (swingman) and Katie Johnson (forward) round out the squad.

The Cougars will open their regular season at home against Eastern Oklahoma on Nov.15. They’ll open conference play at home against Glendale on Nov.28.
