Sophomore Sam VanGalder fired rounds of 69 and 68 to finish in a tie for 2nd during the 2006 AGA Northern Arizona Amateur. The final round was played on the demanding, tree-lined North Course at Antelope Hills GC in Prescott, Arizona. In breezy conditions, VanGalder rallied off five birdies and an eagle to come from behind and almost win the tournament. His effort ranks second best in Cougar Golf history as past player Russell Bergstedt III won the event in 2001.
Two SMCC golfers, Sam VanGalder and Adam Joiner qualified for the 33rd AZ Stroke Play Championship with their fine play during the weekend. The golf program is now preparing for the 2006 Cougar Matchplay Championship.
