July 30, 2007 - Men’s Golf Coach is NCAA Bound

Travis Brown

South Mountain Men’s Golf Coach Travis Brown announced his resignation today to accept the Head Men’s Golf Coach position at Chico State University, an NCAA DII program in Northern California. “I was very impressed with Chico State during my visit and interview.” “The athletic staff and administration is very dedicated to the growth of all student athletes and success of its athletic programs.”

Brown is coming off a very successful eighth season in which SMCC’s golf program won the 2007 ACCAC Region Championship and finished National Runner-Up with five freshmen.  It was the second National Runner Up finish as the Cougars finished 2nd. in 2003.  The program was also honored as one of the top freshman classes in the nation on Golfstat during the 2007 golf season.

Coach Travis Brown was surprised by the late call and was already gearing up for the upcoming 2007/2008 season. “Our returning players and incoming freshman will be tough to beat in 2008.” “It has been tough saying goodbye to such a wonderful group of young men,” said Brown.

Travis Brown was hired in 1999 to rebuild the struggling golf program and in 2001 the team earned a #1 national ranking and qualified for it’s first NJCAA National Championship.  Although the team finished 4th that year, the program won the 2004 National Championship, the first team championship for college athletics in 25 years at South Mountain Community College.  Brown has led his team to six ACCAC Region Championships and coached 20 NJCAA National Academic (11) and Athletic (9) All-Americans. “What I will be most proud of during my days at SMCC is the number of student athletes who left our golf program and then were able to lead, compete and graduate on the four year level,” Brown said. A national search begins this week to find his replacement.
