Ryan Nielsen and Alex Valer narrowly slipped past the team of Aydelotte and Sexton to win the 2005 Cougar Cup. The 36-hole gross event was played at the Par 70 Quailwood Greens Golf Course over the Labor Day Weekend. The event was threatened by numerous lightning strikes and down pours.
At the end of round one, a two-man gross best ball, Nielsen and Valer held a slim lead over Patrick Casabonne and Jon Ross Fowler. The final round format would include both players’ scores and would prove to be costly for many teams who were still in contention to win the tournament.
Defending 2004 champion, Scott Aydelotte and his partner Mark Sexton, shot a two-man total of (-6) 134 on the final day to hold the club house lead for most of the day. The final group of Nielsen and Valer shot (-2) 138 to finish at 196 to win by one. Their final team total of (-14) broke the team record of (-12) shot by 2004 Champions Chris Maurer and Scott Aydelotte. Final team scores are below.
