Freshman Sam VanGalder fired 36 (E) at The Foothills GC to force extra holes with freshman Dalen Linnerson. Linnerson fired a 34 during round one and dominated the event through the first three rounds. VanGalder’s par on the third playoff hole won the event for the first year player from Janesville, Wisconsin.
The event contested over 36 holes and four days requires players to play with their five iron down (10 clubs max) and tests the short game on long par fours and par fives. The long hitting VanGalder improved his up and down percentage and putts per round during the last two days to slip into a tie with Linnerson at the end of 36 holes. The deep rough on the edge of the green on the 36th hole cost Linnerson as he tried to hit a flop shot in which his shot fell short of the green. The men’s golf program now prepares for the upcoming Eastern Arizona Amateur hosted by the Arizona Golf Association.
