Kala Ka’aihue, former South Mountain first baseman, recently concluded his first season in the Atlanta Braves organization. Ka’aihue was an instrumental part of SMCC’s run to the JUCO World Series in 2005, finishing on the World Series All-Tournament team. For the Cougars, he hit .301, led the team with 10 home runs, and had 52 RBIs. He signed a free agent contract with the Atlanta Braves the following the completion of his freshman year at South Mountain. He spent the majority of his first pro season with the Gulf Coast League Braves in Florida, yet was called up to the Danville Braves for their playoff appearance. With Danville, Ka’aihue played in five games and had five extra base hits, including two home runs. Overall, he finished the year with a .301 average in pro ball, with 11 doubles, eight home runs, and 25 RBIs. In the fall of 2005, he was invited to the Atlanta Braves Instructional League in Florida. He currently resides in Hawaii.
