Oct 1, 2005 - Chris Duffy (2000 SMCC Cougar) Starting in the Major Leagues

Chris Duffy was an ALL-ACCAC outfielder in the spring of 2000 for South Mountain Community College.  He went on to play one season at Arizona State University before signing with the Pittsburgh Pirates in the June 2001 MLB draft.  In a short period of time, Duffy has worked his way into a starting role in center field for the Pirates.  He was initially called up to the major league level in April of 2005, but sent back to Triple A after a couple weeks.  In mid-July Duffy was recalled to the major leagues and remained for the rest of the season.  He finished out the 2005 season as the Pirates everyday center fielder (despite minor injuries) with a team high batting average of .341.  In 39 games with the Pirates, Duffy had 43 hits and scored 22 runs in the leadoff spot in the batting order.  Duffy remains the single-season record holder at South Mountain CC for hits, runs scored, and stolen bases.  He currently resides in Peoria, AZ.
