May 31, 2005 - SMCC VS. Iowa Western JUCO World Series

Despite slamming five homeruns, the South Mountain Community College baseball team suffered their most disappointing loss of the season sending them back to Phoenix a few days too early. The Cougars drove in twelve runs in four innings leading 12-8 at the end of seven.  Iowa would not go down without a fight however, and forced SMCC into some uncharacteristic defensive errors down the stretch.

Isiah Ka’aihue seemed unstoppable at the plate slugging two homeruns, going three for five, and bringing in four RBI’s.  The Cougars littered homeruns all over Suplizio Field in Grand Junction, Colorado as three more were knocked over the fence by Dan Colella, Steven Pesqueia, and Max Leon.  Iowa got hot late in the game and scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth and another in the ninth for the win.

The Cougars leave Grand Junction with a record of 2-2, a myriad of converted fans, and writers-cramps from signing so many baseballs, hats, programs, and t-shirts.  The tournament fan-favorites are hopeful that they will return next year with a different outcome.

South Mountain caps a successful season as Region I Champions, Western District Champions and as JUCO World Series participants.
