
The South Mountain Community College baseball team earned their first trip to the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado by winning the Western District Championship. South Mountain defeated Lamar Community College by the score of 7-4 on May 20, 2005 to wrap up a 3-0 record in the tournament. The Cougars were carried by the strength of their starting pitching during the three games. In the first game, Scott Mueller allowed only one run over 8 2/3 innings to get the win over Dixie State College (Utah), by a score of 2-1. Dustin Brader held Lamar Community College to one earned run over nine innings, while striking out 11 batters, to lead South Mountain to a 6-2 win in the second game. In the final game, CJ Retherford held Lamar to three earned runs over nine innings, leading to a 7-4 victory. South Mountain will take a 46-18 record into the JUCO World Series, where their first opponent will be Texarkana College on Saturday May 28, 2005 at 3:00 pm.
