May 19, 2004 - 2004 Baseball Honors

Several members of the South Mountain Community College baseball team received post-season honors.  Pitcher Luis Cota led the way, being named the 2004 ACCAC Conference Player of the Year, with a unanimous vote.  He is the first Cougar to win this honor.  Cota finished the season with a 12-1 record, led the nation with a 0.98 ERA, and 115 strikeouts.  He also contributed offensively with a .368 batting average in 106 At-Bats.

Two Cougars were named to the Western U.S. All-District team.  The All-District team is made up of the top player at each position in the NJCAA’s Western District.  Luis Cota made the team as a starting pitcher.  Luis Nieblas, was voted to the All-District team as the Designated Hitter.  Nieblas finished the 2004 season with an impressive .407 batting average, 14 extra base hits, and 24 RBI.

Cota and Max Leon were named to the ACCAC 1st-Team All-Conference and 1st-Team All-Region.  Leon received the second most votes for an outfielder.  He finished with a .374 batting average, a team high of 70 hits and 96 total bases.

CJ Retherford and Jesus Luna were named to the 2nd-Team All-Conference and 2nd-Team All Region squads.  Retherford, a pitcher and third baseman, finished with a 7-3 record on the mound, 2.25 ERA, and a .313 batting average.  Shortstop Jesus Luna played an outstanding defensive shortstop, had a .324 batting average, and 55 hits.
