May 15, 2005 - Cougar Baseball: ACCAC Playoff (Region Finals) Review (week ending 5-15-05)

For the second time in two weeks, South Mountain was headed to Douglas, Arizona to face Cochise College (who defeated Pima College in a 3 game series), but this time the winner would be crowned the Region 1 Champion.  The Cougars would be attempting to win their first Region 1 Championship in the history of South Mountain Community College.  The ACCAC Finals were also a best of three series.

South Mountain sent Scott Mueller to the mound in the first game of the series.  The Cougar offense continued where they left off in Prescott, scoring six runs in the first four innings.  The big blows on offense came from a two-run triple by Max Leon in the third inning and a two-run home run from Anthony Franco in the fourth inning.  In the fifth inning, Cochise was able to capitalize on three Cougar errors, scoring two unearned runs.  South Mountain however, would not allow Cochise back into the game, scoring twice in the sixth on RBI hits from CJ Retherford and Dan Colella.  The Cougars pulled away by scoring seven more times in the final three innings of the game.  Scott Mueller pitched six innings, allowing no earned runs on five hits, striking out seven batters.  Rene Lopez, Ernest Moraga, and Stephen Miller pitched the final three innings for the Cougars.  All nine offensive starters for the Cougars recorded at least one hit in the 20-hit attack.  South Mountain won Game 1 by the score of 15-6.

South Mountain had an opportunity to win their first Region 1 Division1 Championship on Friday afternoon in Game 2 against Cochise College.  The Cougars sent CJ Retherford to the mound, with the experience of having pitched and won a high school state championship two years ago.  South Mountain began the scoring in the second inning on an RBI single from Jesus Luna.  Cochise was able to answer with a run of their own in the third inning.  With the game tied at one in the fifth inning pitcher CJ Retherford helped himself out by hitting a two-out home run to put the Cougars up 2-1.  The Cougars then loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth inning.  South Mountain sent up pinch hitter Max Leon (not starting because of an injury the previous day), who singled in all three runners to give the Cougars a 5-1 lead.  Retherford followed with another single before Anthony Franco drove in two more runs to extend the lead to 7-1.  The Cougars added another run in the seventh inning on an RBI single from Steven Pesqueira to capture an 8-1 lead.  However, the Cochise Apaches would not give in.  Cochise was able to cash in on two South Mountain errors in the seventh inning to score three runs, making the score 8-4.  Then, after two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Cochise answered with three hits, a walk, and a Cougar error to score three runs.  With runners on first and second, CJ Retherford was able to strike out the final batter to record the win for the Cougars, 8-7.  With the win, South Mountain wins the Region 1 Championship for the first time and set a new school record for wins in a season at 43 wins.
