May 13, 2005 - Cougars Win First Ever Region I Division I Championship!

The South Mountain Community College baseball team claimed their first Region 1 Championship on May 13, 2005.  After finishing the 2005 regular season with the 3rd best record in the ACCAC, South Mountain was the 4th seeded team in the Region playoffs.  In the first round, the Cougars went to the top seeded Yavapai College and defeated the Roughriders, winning two of three to advance to the Region 1 Finals.  The Cougars again went on the road to play 3rd seeded Cochise College in Douglas, Arizona.  South Mountain scored 23 runs in the first two games to claim their first region championship, sweeping the first two games of the three game series.  These victories also set a new school record for wins in a season with 43.  South Mountain pitcher/third baseman CJ Retherford was named the Most Valuable Player of the Region 1 tournament, collecting 7 hits against Cochise, as well as pitching a complete game victory to win the championship.
