Following a very successful 2005 season, four members of the South Mountain Community College baseball team signed pro contracts and two others were re-drafted in the 2005 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. On June 3, 2005, freshman outfielder Juan Buck signed with the Cincinnati Reds. Buck was sent to begin his professional career with the Reds Rookie League team in Sarasota, Florida. On June 6, 2005, Kala Ka’aihue, freshman first baseman, signed with the Atlanta Braves. Ka’aihue finished the 2005 season as the Cougars leader in home runs (10) and RBIs (52), along with a .301 batting average. He was named to the 2005 JUCO World Series All-Tournament team. He has reported to the Braves Rookie team of the Gulf Coast League in Kissimmee, Florida. Also on June 6, 2005, Max Leon signed a professional contract with the Detroit Tigers. Leon, a sophomore outfielder, was a 1st Team All-Region outfielder and Pre-Season All-American in his two years with South Mountain. He finished his 2004 season with a .374 average and the 2005 season with a .308 average. Max will begin his professional career in Mexico. On June 15, 2005, sophomore catcher/infielder Luis Nieblas signed a professional contract with the Lincoln Saltdogs, an Independent affiliate in Lincoln, Nebraska. Nieblas had an outstanding two-year career at South Mountain, hitting .407 as a freshman and .335 as a sophomore. In 2004, he was named to the All-Western District Team and in 2005 made the JUCO World Series All-Tournament Team. Freshman pitchers Scott Mueller and Rene Garcia were both selected in the 2005 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft on June 8, 2005. The Arizona Diamondbacks selected Mueller and Garcia.
