Oct. 20, 2009 - Cougars Finish 2nd in MGCCC Invitational
Gulfport, MS--The final tournament of the fall season for the Cougars brought them to beautiful Gulfport, MS where they would come in as the defending champions at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Invitational. Windance Country Club where the event is hosted is also the site for the Adams Tour Championship which traditionally finishes a couple of days before the participants in the MGCCC Invitational take to the course. This year’s field was another strong field with teams comprised from NJCAA Division I and II schools as well as a couple strong NAIA teams. Out of those 15 teams 8 of the teams are ranked in the top 10 in their respective divisions.
The course which received enough rain the week before, to force the tournament to be played as a 36-hole event and to have the participants play the ball as lift clean and place in the fairways and have the rough playing extremely tough. The opening round would find a local team from Mississippi, Meridian Community College, unfazed by the conditions as they were the only team to break 300 in the 15 team field, as they posted a 1-under 287 total. In second place after day 1, was defending NJCAA Division II National Champion John A. Logan College at 302, and close behind them in 3rd place where the Cougars who opened up with a disappointing round of 304. The Cougars were lead by Sophomore Trent Ka’ahanui who fired a 1-over round of 73 and Sophomore David Gonzales who shot a 3-over 75. The other Cougars in the field were Davis Garner who fired a 77, Nick Umholtz who shot 79, and Scott Spiewak shooting an 82. More
Sept. 21, 2009 - Ka’ahanui and Spiewak Finish 1st and 2nd, Lead the Cougars
Ruidoso, NM--The opening tournament of the year is always interesting at the junior college ranks since every year teams typically lose half their team to 4 year schools. That was no different for the #1 ranked South Mountain Community College Cougars Men’s Golf team who sent their top three players from last years 3rd place finish at the NJCAA National Championship to NCAA Division I schools on scholarships. However, the Cougars showed their strength and depth being led by two returning Sophomores Trent Ka’ahanui and Scott Spiewak.
After the morning 18 holes at the Links at Sierra Blanca in Ruidoso, NM, the Cougars posted a 6-under par 282 which was good enough for 4th place after New Mexico CC and Wayland Baptist University posted rounds of 10-under 278. The Cougars were led by Trent Ka’ahanui who opened with a round of 67, Freshman Nick Umholtz fired a round of 70, Scott Spiewak shot 71, Sophomore transfer David Gonzales shot 74, and Freshman Jordan Burgess shot 76. May 28, 2009-Men's Golf Recap of Season
BY JIM RICHARDS
With turnover the way it is at two-year junior colleges, few teams ever get the chance to knock the chips off their shoulders from the previous seasons.
The South Mountain men's golf team did just that over the 2009 season.
Week by week and invitational by invitational, Jake Harrington's men's golf team took matters one step at at time in an effort to bounce back from a disastrous 2008 regional.
And one by one, it was turning into the greatest season in South history.
First, the Cougars captured an amazing 5 of 6 ACCAC invitational titles, losing their only invitational when a national tournament was scheduled the same days, dividing the squad.
They also ended Scottsdale CC's amazing 29-year reign as ACCAC champions.
And with one of the deepest and strongest teams ever assembled at South Mountain, the Cougars rode a whopping 32-stroke victory at the 2009 NJCAA Region I Div.II Tournament to a spot in the NJCAA national tournament, where they held a slim lead after three of four rounds. More

April 21, 2009-CGCC Invitational and Conference Champions!
Mesa, AZ -- The final round of play Tuesday was one for the record books. The South Mountain Community College Cougars came away with a big back nine to shoot a final round of 6-under par, 282 giving them a two day total of 18-under par and the CGCC Invitational Team Championship and most importantly the 2009 ACCAC Conference Championship. For the last 29 years the Artichokes from Scottsdale Community College have claimed the ACCAC Conference Title before being knocked off this year by the South Mountain Community College Cougars.
It was not an easy round this afternoon for the Cougars as they turned the front nine with their top 4 players at even par and the rest of the field making a move. However, they would once again receive a much needed boost from Freshman Scott Spiewak who started off playing the first 8 holes at 1-over par but would hit his favorite stretch of the golf course and would birdie 5 holes in a row from 9-13 to move him to 4-under par for the day before dropping 2 shots coming in at the 18th to finish at 2-under par 70 for the day but in a T2 at 8-under, 136 for the tournament. Also, helping to lead the charge was Sophomore Scott Brace who turned at 1-under and kept adding to his total as he shot 2-under 34 on the back side, carding a 3-under 69 putting him in a T7 at 4-under 140 for the tournament. Freshman Trent Ka’ahanui would bounce back from an even par front side with a 2-under back nine helping him fire a round of 2-under 70 and a 2-over 146 total. Sophomore Adam Winwood played the back nine in even par giving him a 1-over 73 total for the day and an even par 144 for the tournament. Sophomore Rob Murray would finish at 1-under 143 for the tournament with a 74 on Tuesday and Sophomore Chace Nathe finished at 1-over 145 with a 75 on Tuesday.
“I am very proud of the way this team battled not only today but the way we have battled the entire year. It is a great accomplishment to finish Conference play with a win and to be Conference Champions after falling short in the final conference tournament last year. This was one of our team’s main goals all year and something we have all worked really hard to achieve” said Coach Jake Harrington.
The Cougars will be back in play next week as they play in the NJCAA Division II Region I Championship at Vistal Golf Course in Phoenix, Arizona on April 30, 2009 – May 3, 2009, were the top 2 teams will advance to the NJCAA Division II National Championship.

Feb 16, 2009-Men's Golf Tournament
By Jim Richards
The No.1-ranked SMCC men's golf team returned to the scene of the crime this week and came away with a much better taste in their mouths than the last time they left Nogales' Rio Rico Resort and Country Club.
Led by individual medalist Trent Ka'ahanui's 69-75--149, the Cougars captured the first ACCAC invitational of the year--the Pima CC Invitational--by 13 strokes over second place Scottsdale.
For the Cougars, the victory cleared a big, early-season mental hurdle. The course was the same in which SMCC faltered at last season's NJCAA Region I Div.II Golf Tournament, where they finished in third place, cutting short an outstanding year.
Only the top two teams went on to the NJCAA national tournament. More

September 13, 2008-Brace Storms Back and Finishes Tied With Barron 1 Shot Back of Low Amateur Title
Carefree, AZ –Saturday proved to be an exciting day at the Apache Course with Sophomore Scott Brace making waves by storming back from his T60 position and passing half the field with a great round of 5-under 67 leaving him at 4-under for the tournament. When asked about his round Brace said “I saw Coach (Harrington) at the turn and I told him I was 1-under on the day and he told me to keep plugging away and get a couple more back. “ Brace apparently took the challenge to heart and birdied his next 3 holes, made a couple pars and found one more birdie coming in to shoot 4-under on the back and 5-under 67 on the day, leaving him at 4-under 212 for the tournament.
Freshman BrandenBarron continued his solid play on Saturday, making the turn at 2-under and then coasting in with 9 straight pars on his back-nine topped off by a disappointing 3 putt par on his 18th hole to finish tied with Brace at 4-under 212 for the tournament and one shot back of the prestigious low amateur title. Sophomore Adam Winwood was the other Cougar golfer to make the cut. Winwood played a consistent roundbattling back from a disappointing 2-over front nine to shoot 1-under on the back nine putting him at 1-over 73 the final day and Even par 216 for the tournament.
Catching up with Coach Harrington after the final round Saturday he said “ I am very proud of all three of these guys for battling it out and making the cut this week. Each of them can take a great deal of confidence away from this event and use it as another building block in their golfing careers and prepare them for the upcoming college season.”
September 12, 2008-3 Cougar Golfers Make the Cut
Carefree, AZ - - After 2 days of play, Desert Mountain’s Apache Course is proving to be a course that is out there for the taking, however, if you get out of your game plan for one shot you can get penalized in a hurry. Fortunately for three Cougar golfers they are playing good enough golf to be hanging around with the pros on the weekend. Barron continues to lead the way for the Cougars following up his 3-under 69 with a 1-over 73 leaving him well below the 1-over cut line. Following closely behind him is Adam Winwood, who has fired rounds of 1-over 73 the first day and 2-under 70 the second day to leave him at 1-under and 1 shot clear of the cut. Last but not least is Scott Brace, who last year was one of only 2 amateurs to make the cut in the Arizona Open, Brace followed up his up and down 2-over 74 with a solid 1-under 71 to leave him at 1-over just squeezing into the weekend, right on the cutline of 1-over.
All 3 golfers will be teeing off in the final round tomorrow morning joined by 7 other amateurs who made the cut by placing in the top 60 and ties.
