David Smith enters his fifth season as the Pitching Coach at South Mountain Community College.  Coach Smith also served as an assistant at SMCC in 2000 and 2001.  Smith’s pitching staffs have been the focal point for success in the SMCC baseball program.  Since taking over as the pitching coach, the Cougars have set single season records in several pitching statistics.  Records established during his tenure are team earned run average (2.62), strikeouts (489), wins (48), innings pitched (544.3), and saves (22).

In his 6 years on the Cougar coaching staff, Coach Smith has worked with 18 pitchers that have been drafted professionally.  He has played a significant role in 24 pitchers receiving scholarship offers to 4-year universities.  Twelve of his pitchers have moved on to Division 1 baseball programs.  Those of recent success include Luis Cota, who signed a contract in excess of $1 million in 2004, Isaac Hess (2004) to Washington State, CJ Retherford (2005), Scott Mueller (2006), and Dustin Brader (2006) to Arizona State. From the 2008 team, Jordan Whatcott received a scholarship to the University of Utah and Jordan Roualdes received a scholarship to the University of Nebraska. In his 5 seasons as the pitching coach, Coach Smith has had 9 pitchers named to the All-Conference and All-Region teams. 

Coach Smith was born and raised in Elk City, OK.  He attended Elk City High School before receiving a scholarship to play baseball at Colby Community College.  Smith was an All-Conference pitcher at Colby and received another scholarship to play for Mesa State College in Grand Junction, CO.  Following his playing career, He moved back to Oklahoma to complete his Bachelors Degree at the University of Central Oklahoma.  In 2000, Coach Smith moved to Arizona and began his coaching career at SMCC.  Smith currently resides in Surprise, AZ. and is married to wife Traci with a son Cannon Reed (5) and a daughter Aniston Kay (2).
