May 28th, 2009- Men's Golf Recap of Season

BY JIM RICHARDS

With turnover the way it is at two-year junior colleges, few teams ever get the chance to knock the chips off their shoulders from the previous seasons.

The South Mountain men's golf team did just that over the 2009 season.

Week by week and invitational by invitational, Jake Harrington's men's golf team took matters one step at at time in an effort to bounce back from a disastrous 2008 regional.

And one by one, it was turning into the greatest season in South history.

First, the Cougars captured an amazing 5 of 6 ACCAC invitational titles, losing their only invitational when a national tournament was scheduled the same days, dividing the squad.

They also ended Scottsdale CC's amazing 29-year reign as ACCAC champions.

And with one of the deepest and strongest teams ever assembled at South Mountain, the Cougars rode a whopping 32-stroke victory at the 2009 NJCAA Region I Div.II Tournament to a spot in the NJCAA national tournament, where they held a slim lead after three of four rounds.More Moore

May 15th 2009- No.1-ranked Cougars headed back to a Nationals

By Jim Richards

SMCC sophomore Scott Brace remembered the disappointment he felt when his club failed to qualify for nationals a year ago.

But it wasn’t completely on his mind this past week when the No.1-ranked Cougars headed back to a NJCAA Region Division II tournament that was eerily similar to last year’s.

“It wasn’t that we were trying to avenge anything,” Brace said. “We just wanted to show everyone that we were the best team this year.”

The Cougars certainly did just that, with a 32-stroke victory over second-place Chandler-Gilbert on the Vistal Golf Course.

And this time it came when it mattered most.

The Cougars qualified for the NJCAA-II national golf tournament in Scottsboro, Alabama, where they’ll return to the Goose Pond Colony Golf Club.

The Cougars held their own at Goose Pond Colony seven weeks ago in a national tournament featuring several of the top golf schools in the nation, many of which will return for the championship tournament.  More Moore

Sophomore Scott Brace earned individual medalist honors for the Cougars with a final round 67 to beat out teammates Trent Ka’ahanui and Adam Winwood who finished in second and third place respectively. More Moore

Women’s golf headed to National tournament.

By Jim Richards

When former SMCC men’s golf coach Travis Brown approached Meg Matetich about the open women’s golf coaching position at the school, she immediately could see the chance for success.

“I thought there was an opportunity for the program to develop,” said Matetich, also the coach of a very strong Chaparral girls’ high school golf program. “We have access to some very nice courses, The Legacy, The Raven, Talking Stick.  (We have) a lot of nice places to practice, which is good.”

This year’s squad also had the benefit of a few lessons from pro Howard Twitty. More Moore

Three SMCC Teams Gunning for the Postseason

By Jim Richards

April 21, 2009 will likely go down as one of the great days in the history of South Mountain Community College sports.

Here’s what happened...

For the first time in school history, the SMCC men’s golf team captured the ACCAC regular-season title, ending Scottsdale CC’s 29-year reign as conference champions.

The women’s golf team qualified for the national tournament.

The baseball team defeated No.4-ranked Yavapai College in both games of a thrilling double-header.

The softball team played the role of spoiler and defeated Paradise Valley, keeping  PVCC out of  the playoff.

Meg Matetich’s women’s golf team picked up the No.2 seed coming out of the NJCAA Region I tournament  and will join top-seeded Mesa Community at the LPGA Golf Course in  Daytona Beach, Fla. (May 18-21).

Reaching the national tournament is quite an accomplishment for the Lady Cougars, who were unable to field an entire team the previous season.

The Cougars’ men’s team captured their fifth conference invitational out of six this season with a five-stroke victory over second-place Mesa CC at the Chandler-Gilbert-hosted invitational at Toka Sticks.  More Moore

Baseball update

By Jim Richards

The Cougars' baseball team hasn't given up on obtaining the No.2 playoff spot for the upcoming NJCAA Region I Division II tournament, but they are shooting for a team accomplishment no other SMCC team has managed.

"No team in our history has won 40 games in a season," SMCC coach Todd Eastin said.

After Wednesday's wild 5-4, 10-inning victory over No.4 Central Arizona, the Cougars have a 36-14 record with six games remaining. Even the 2005 World Series team managed a total of 39 wins.

The Cougars' 36th win of the season Wednesday was a memorable one. Despite hitting six batters and having four runners picked off base, the Cougars managed to remain three games within Central in the ACCAC standings.

The top two teams will host playoff games and Yavapai is a shoe-in to capture the regular-season title. All eyes will be on Saturday's battle in Prescott featuring No.4 Central against No.3 Yavapai in a double-header, that, should Yavapai sweep and the Cougars sweep against cellar-dwelling Eastern Arizona at home Saturday, would pull the Cougars to within one game of hosting the tournament's first round.

"(Wednesday's win) was a confidence booster for our club," Eastin said.

"Those wins just don't happen. We just kept getting on base and our defense was better than their's over the final innings."  More Moore

Volleyball Update

By Jim Richards

SMCC volleyball coach Pat Mooney announced the signings of two top prep recruits this past week.

Joining the Cougars’ volleyball program are outsider hitter Brandi Rourke, out of Conference IA San Simon/Bowie High School and setter Melissa Rankin out of Red Mountain.

Mooney said Rourke, who stands 5’7, has a “cannon for an arm.” He first discovered her at a freshman tournament where he made a note to “watch this kid.”

Mooney said the 5’3 Rankin is “as feisty as they come,” a wonderful trait for a setter. Mooney noted that Rankin is: “a competitive leader with good court sense and able to distribute the ball effectively to her hitter.”
He added that while Rankin is considered slightly undersized for a college volleyball player, “she will make up for it with her determination and confidence.”

With 15 wins last season, the Cougars had the fifth highest win total in the ACCAC. Mooney’s squad had only three sophomore last season after coming off a playoff run the previous season.

“We are all quite excited to have Melissa and Brandi join the team,” Mooney said. “They both bring a competitive and confident demeanor to the team that will mesh very well with the returning class of sophomores.  They both also have versatility that will enable them to play different positions if the personnel of the team designates.”
